Overview

El concepto arcaico y negativo de envejecimiento, que ligaba la senectud con la enfermedad, ya no es considerado en la actualidad. Los estudios realizados en estas últimas décadas han mostrado que a pesar de la comorbilidad asociada al fenómeno del envejecimiento, muchos ancianos pueden tener una alta capacidad funcional manteniéndose integrados socialmente en su medio habitual. Para ello, la aplicación de programas preventivos desde la etapa de adulto posibilitan a éstos mantener un alto bienestar físico, psicológico y social es fundamental para alcanzar una vejez prolongada con alta calidad de vida.

EL campo de la geriatría ha incorporado distintos aspectos socio sanitarios dentro de un contexto integral (biológico, psicológico y social) transformándose en una ciencia interdisciplinario ligada a todos los ámbitos de la salud. Así la gerontopsicomotricidad se constituye como una técnica no farmacológicas dentro de la intervención gerontológico. El objetivo especifico de esta disciplina es el desarrollo de programas de estimulación psicomotriz, dirigido tanto a adultos como al anciano, con la finalidad de prevenir y/o retrasar el deterioro psicobiológico asociado al envejecimiento, mantenido la mayor independencia funcional en las etapas avanzadas de la vida.

Los programas de gerontopsicomotricidad se encuadran en el fomento tanto de la actividad perceptivo-motora del adulto y del anciano como de su capacidad relacional, tratando de neutralizar los procesos de petrogénesis psicomotora, la disminución de los hábitos motrices, el declive de las actividades cognitivas, el deterioro conceptual y perceptivo, y los trastornos emocionales y afectivos por perdidas de autoestima personal.

El trabajo que se presenta es el fruto de un programa gerontopsicomotriz dirigido a una muestra de ancianos institucionalizados pertenecientes a un medio rural.
